The most populated county in SW Washington is Clark County (pop. 415,000), just across the Columbia River from Portland and one of the four counties that make up the greater Portland-Vancouver Metropolitan Area: Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas Counties in Oregon, and Clark County in Washington.
Clark County Washington cities and towns include: Vancouver, the largest city, as well as Battleground, Camas, Ridgefield, Washougal, La Center, Hockinson, Brush Prairie, Yacolt, Amboy, and part of Woodland.
Clark County is one of the fastest growing counties in Washington state. The draw? Relative to neighboring Portland, Clark County offers quality homes at more-for-your-money prices, lower property taxes and no state income taxes, excellent well-funded schools, and easy commuting to Portland for those who work and play there. Like much of the Pacific Northwest, nature has endowed the area with splendid natural beauty, from rolling meadows and pastoral farmland to rugged forested hills and rushing rivers. And all around are views of the snow-capped peaks of the nearby Cascades. Not surprisingly, there is a wealth of oudoor recreational opportunities.
Within its many pleasing city and suburban neighborhoods as well as beautiful rural areas for good country living, often close to urban amenities, Clark County residents benefit from plenty of good shopping, excellent healthcare services providing state-of-the-art care, and a growing economy offering new jobs and opportunities. Top employers include health care, hi-tech industries, retail, and a large variety of services. There is a labor force of approximately 205,400, with an unemployment rate of just 5.4%. A large number of workers commute to Portland, and of these, nearly two-thirds have advanced education degrees, and a large proportion of them work as managers and administrators and are in professional and technical occupations.
Area communities sponsor a wide variety of special events and festivals throughout the year. The annual Clark County Fair is popular with Portlanders as well as Clark County residents, and the sounds of big-name entertainers regularly delight music lovers from near and far at the new Clark County Amphitheater.
Major highways include two interstate freeways (I-5 and I-205) which cross the Columbia River that separates Vancouver and Portland, as well as several state routes (SR 14, 500, and 503). Interstate-5 is the major route between Southern California and Canada. The Portland International Airport is just across the Columbia River from Clark County, and Amtrak also regularly serves the area with trains en route from as far away as San Diego to Seattle.
