Portland - Vancouver Metro Area
Southwest Washington -- especially Clark County Washington including Vancouver Washington and the surrounding communities of Battleground, Camas, Hockinson, La Center, Ridgefield, and Washougal -- is one of the most popular choices for good living in the Pacific Northwest. There are plenty of reasons for its desirability, including the area's rewarding quality of life and lifestyle options, large variety of quality homes in both urban and rural settings, and its relative affordability when compared to Portland Oregon (not to mention other areas, such as California), as well as the state of Washington's favorable tax structure -- including no state taxes on earned or retirement income and inheritances -- plus a mild climate, and spectacular natural beauty! The immediate proximity to dynamic Portland Oregon is an added "perk", especially for residents of Vancouver and its surrounding communities.
In addition to Clark County, nearest to Portland, the region includes Cowlitz, Skamania, Wahkiakum, and Pacific Counties. Located along each side of the broad Columbia River as it flows out of the spectacularly scenic Columbia River Gorge and on toward the Pacific Ocean (only a little more than an hour's drive to the west), the cities of Portland Oregon and Vancouver Washington are at a crossroads of auto, plane, and train transportation between the major West Coast cities of California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, Canada, all no more than a few hours away, depending on the mode of transit used. Seattle is ony a few hours drive to the north. Even driving longer distances is manageable. San Francisco, for example, can be reached in one day's drive (9-10 hours).
The Portland International Airport, conveniently situated on the border between Vancouver and Portland and only minutes away from both downtown centers, offers multiple short flights daily between Portland and Vancouver and the San Francisco Bay Area, San Jose, Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, Las Vegas, and other points all around. Amtrak serves the area, too, stopping in both Vancouver and Portland -- check out Portland's wonderfully restored train station! -- as they pass between California cities and Seattle.
